Everyone knows that if you want to be a lawyer then you need to go to law school. Most people know that the degree that you get from law school is a degree called the juris doctorate. What many people don’t realize, however, is that the juris doctorate is not a terminal degree. It is possible to go on to get more advanced degrees in the study of law, degrees such as the Masters Degree in Law.

What is the Purpose of a Masters in Law?

The Masters in Law is a degree that allows those students interested in the law to take their practice of the law further than would be possible if they only received the traditional juris doctorate degree. The main reason that a student would be interested in getting a Masters in Law would be for the purpose of being able to specialize in specific areas of the law.

The student who gets a Master Degree in Law is most likely going to use that degree to do a combination of legal practice and legal research. People interested in highly specialized areas of the law will be able to create a unique private practice or to work within a larger law practice that allows them to focus specifically on those cases that they find to be most interesting or important. Although it is possible to do this with a juris doctorate, it is much easier to do this after obtaining the Masters in Law.

Masters of Law Specialties

The Masters of Law degree can be obtained by people interested in a whole range of different specialty areas of the law. Many students who opt to get a Masters of Law will choose to specialize in financial law. Within this category of law there are many different options for Masters Degree in Law specialties including the specialties of tax law, bankruptcy law and estate planning.

Financial law isn’t the only type of law that can be studied through a Masters Degree in Law program though. Some students will opt to get a Master of Science in Law that allows them to deal with important modern social issues. Specialty areas for these students could include environmental law, human rights law and information technology law.

Master Degree in Law Careers

After obtaining a Master Degree in Law, a student is equipped to really move forward with a career in the specialty area that was studied. Students who pursue this type of degree tend to be highly ambitious. They don’t merely want to practice law but also intend to do research and author papers related to the area of law that they are studying. Some of these students will even go on further with their degrees to get a PhD in law, usually in the same focus area that they studied for their Master Degree in Law.
