GRE

There is no official entrance exam for graduate-level civil engineering programs, so applicants will usually be admitted with a satisfactory GRE score. For engineering applicants, admissions officers will place a higher emphasis on quantitative scores.

Additional Requirements

Portfolio

Some schools request students present a portfolio that includes previous projects from civil or environmental engineering classes.

Abstracts

Applicants may be asked to illustrate their knowledge of the field by providing schools with abstracts of published articles or conference presentations on civil or environmental engineering.

What undergraduate degrees do civil engineering students typically hold?

  • Civil Engineering
  • Architectural Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering

What can I do to better my chances of getting into an online master’s program in civil engineering?

  • Study mathematics, technology, and design as a high school student/undergraduate.
  • Explore careers in civil engineering, and gain an understanding for how this field differs from other engineering sectors.
  • Complete an undergraduate internship with a reputable engineering firm.
  • Join a student-led organization or club as an undergraduate, and participate in engineering-oriented competitions and events.

Financial Aid

What scholarships and grants are available to online civil engineering master’s students?

  • AACE International Scholarships: The AACE offers several scholarships throughout the year (ranging between $2,000 and $8,000) available to undergraduates in their final year who have been accepted into an accredited, graduate-level engineering program.
  • SHPE Foundation Scholarships: Applicants for these awards ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 must be able to claim Hispanic/Latino heritage and be enrolled in a two- or four-year college engineering program in the United States.
  • IFMA Foundation Scholarship: This award ranges from $1,500 to $5,000 per recipient and is reserved for students specializing in facilities management or a closely related field.
  • New England Water Works Association: The NEWWA lists five different scholarships ranging from $1,500 to $5,000 for students pursuing degrees in civil engineering or other engineering fields from New England-based institutions.
  • Arthur S. Tuttle Scholarship: This merit-based, annual award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is awarded to graduate students pursuing accredited degrees in the field of civil engineering.
  • National Defense Science & Engineering Graduate Fellowship: This three-year fellowship includes full tuition support, a monthly living allowance, and an annual medical insurance stipend of $1,000. The fellowship is highly competitive, but it does not come with a military service obligation.
  • O. H. Ammann Research Fellowship in Structural Engineering: This research-based fellowship is awarded exclusively to members of the ASCE.
  • Jack E. Leisch Memorial National Graduate Fellowship: This $5,000 fellowship is awarded to graduate-level engineering students with an interest in “geometric design, traffic engineering and transportation planning” (ASCE membership is required).
  • National Physical Science Consortium: This organization awards research-oriented fellowships to women and minority groups that are concentrated in the fields of science, mathematics, and engineering.
  • HBCU STEM Fellowship Program: This fellowship is reserved for men and women who have earned a science, mathematics, engineering, and/or technology degree from a historically black college or university.
