Best Online
Finance Master’s Programs

2017_MastersDegree.com-best-online-masters-programs-financeAccording to the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), finance is one of the most sought after MBA specializations. After the general MBA, a Master’s in Finance is the next most commonly pursued specialized program for U.S. business majors.

An MBA in finance or a masters of finance degree teaches students leadership and managerial skills, as well as competencies in mathematics and data analysis. Students can select from a wide range of electives to customize their degree in finance, preparing them for careers in banking, healthcare, insurance, retail and manufacturing.

With most MBA candidates working full-time in business occupations already, an online degree program offers a flexible way to return to school without sacrificing a student’s career. Business professionals, by virtue of the skills their prior education and occupational experience has ingrained in them, are well-suited to the challenges and rewards of independent study that characterizes distance learning.

Below, we have ranked the best online master’s programs in finance. The programs and universities on this list are nationally recognized for their affordability, the caliber of their faculty, the convenience of their online degree completion and the success and satisfaction of its graduates.

Our Methodology

Our rankings methodology begins with two crucial factors:

The school's commitment to consistently rewarding degrees - We pit the number of students awarded a master's degree in the most recent academic year against total graduate student enrollment for the same year. The more degrees awarded, relative to the student population, the more the school prioritizes helping their students complete programs and obtain degrees.

The school's commitment to online graduate education - We look at the total number of master's programs offered by a school compared to the number of online master's programs offered. This tells us the school is committed to providing a quality, online program that compliments, or even goes beyond, their on-campus graduate offerings. It is also an indicator of the school's commitment to working students who need no small amount of flexibility in order to pursue an education and advance their career.

From there, we confirmed that the school offered the following services, as reported by the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS):

  • Academic/Career Counseling Service
  • Employment Services for Students
  • Placement Services for Completers

These services are the essential indicator that a school understands how to bridge the gap between their online master's programs and the working world. Any school lacking in these basic services was not included in our final list.

All data referenced above is sourced from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, overseen by the National Center for Education Statistics.

    • I've been working in information technology for about 20 years at the same company and had finished my undergraduate degree in finance and had thought about going to a master's program. I had looked at a lot of master of business administration type of degrees and found that they were really not addressing what I think was a big issue at our company and I think in business and that's really the human side of business. So, I had looked at a number of schools in the area and came across Benedictine. The M.S.M.O.B. program completely changed the way I look at my organization. It's the human side of everything that you think about. Because everything is organization in the way the world works.

      • This 36-credit MBA can be completed on campus, as well as online, in roughly 24 months.
      • The GMAT is not required for admission into WU’s MBA program.
      • For working students who may have applicable life experience, WU offers some credit for that experience and prior coursework.

For some courses, students may be able to participate in fusion courses; these are WU’s version of hybrid learning, which combine online learning with in-person communications and activities on campus. There is also a Certificate of Advanced Study in Finance available. To qualify, students must complete one of the five elective finance courses offered at Wilmington, as well as that course's prerequisites.

    The Online Environment

    • Students take part in classes online via WU’s learning management system, Blackboard. On Blackboard, students can complete any of the tasks they might normally take part in face-to-face, such as applying for and enrolling in classes, submitting assignments, reviewing course materials, taking quizzes and exams and participating in discussions with classmates about course materials.

Recently upgraded, the program now offers Blackboard Collaborate, which allows for more web-based virtual meetings and conferences, as well as Blackboard Organizations, where students in cohorts and clubs can hold virtual meetings online. The college also uses Taskstream to better streamline student and teacher productivity.

While many of the courses for this 36-credit program are presented online, students get a taste of experiential learning with the capstone course. For this culminating final project, students meet on the Northern campus in Aberdeen. During the summer of the second year of study, all program participants will gather together for the space of a week.

    The Online Environment

    • This program is flexible and aims to engender in its students the ability to interpret results and research, boosting students' critical and independent thinking skills. Outside of the mandatory capstone product, all classes are held online for the convenience of Northern State students.

On-campus, the technology services and facilities are plentiful, and include free computer repair, wireless printing through myNSU, smart classrooms that are filled with cutting edge hardware (such as video-conferencing-enabled classrooms) and so much more. Students have access to a wealth of services online, too, such as WebAdvisor, Desire2Learn and Mobile Blackboard.

    • The Banking and Financial Services program through NSU has given me specific tools I need to grow in the banking industry and my career.

    What to Expect

    • The Professional Master of Business Administration: Finance at UW Oshkosh is a competitive and rigorous degree plan. Once completed, students who took part in these courses with small class sizes (15-30 per class) will have earned a rare, distinctive degree.

      • The program takes 2-4 years to complete part-time.
      • Students must complete and receive passing scores on the GRE or the GMAT. Students can waive this prerequisite, but only if they have extensive business experience in lieu of the test, or else if students possess one of several specialized certifications.

For this degree, Level I courses are foundational; these can be completed prior to or during enrollment. Once these course are complete, 33 credit hours of Level II courses will be studied. Any grade below a B in these classes renders the class void towards the degree. Once Level II has concluded, students then commit to the financial emphasis, which is available completely online.

    The Online Environment

    • These courses, with the exception of experiential learning, are available online. To facilitate distance learning, students have access to Desire2Learn, a suite of productivity apps like Titan Mail, Titan Files, an ePortfolio management tool, a UW Oshkosh Mobile App and online video tutorials from lynda.com.

Technology can give business majors a definitive edge in the jobs market, and for this reason, students are at a distinct advantage in attending UW Oshkosh. And, according to the university, graduates of the business program ranked in the top 5% nationally on the MBA students' assessment exam.
